1. WHAT IS PASSIVE VOICE?
In English, a sentence can be written in two ways:
Active voice → The subject does the action.
Passive voice → The subject receives the action.
Example:
Active: The teacher teaches English.
Passive: English is taught by the teacher.
2. RULES FOR CHANGING ACTIVE TO PASSIVE
Object of the active sentence becomes the subject in passive.
Verb form changes → Use be + past participle (V3).
Subject of the active becomes “by + agent” (sometimes omitted).
Tense must be carefully maintained.
3. PASSIVE FORMS IN ALL TENSES
SIMPLE TENSES
Present Simple:
Active – She writes a letter.
Passive – A letter is written by her.
Past Simple:
Active – He solved the problem.
Passive – The problem was solved by him.
Future Simple:
Active – They will complete the work.
Passive – The work will be completed by them.
CONTINUOUS TENSES
Present Continuous:
Active – She is reading a book.
Passive – A book is being read by her.
Past Continuous:
Active – He was driving the car.
Passive – The car was being driven by him.
Future Continuous → Passive not normally used.
PERFECT TENSES
Present Perfect:
Active – They have finished the job.
Passive – The job has been finished by them.
Past Perfect:
Active – She had cooked the meal.
Passive – The meal had been cooked by her.
Future Perfect:
Active – He will have written the report.
Passive – The report will have been written by him.
MODAL VERBS
Active – You can solve this puzzle.
Passive – This puzzle can be solved by you.
Active – They must follow the rules.
Passive – The rules must be followed by them.
4. WHEN TO USE PASSIVE
When the doer (subject) is unknown, unimportant, or obvious.
To emphasize the action more than the doer.
In formal writing (science, news, notices, etc.).
Example:
The thief was arrested. (doer not mentioned)
English is spoken worldwide.
5. COMMON PASSIVE CONSTRUCTIONS
It is said / believed / thought
It is said that honesty is the best policy.
Let → Let the door be opened.
Imperatives → Keep silence. → Silence should be kept.
In short:
Active → Subject + Verb + Object
Passive → Object + “be” + V3 + (by + Subject)
