OVERVIEW

 

Imperatives are sentences that give commands, requests, advice, instructions, or prohibitions.

They usually begin with the base form of a verb and do not have a subject, because the subject “you” is implied.

 

Types of Imperatives

 

A. Commands/Orders

 

Used to tell someone to do something.

 

Example: Close the door.

 

B. Requests

 

Polite form of command.

 

Example: Please pass me the salt.

 

C. Advice/Instruction

 

To give guidance or instruction.

 

Example: Take care of your health.

 

D. Prohibition/Warning

 

To forbid someone from doing something.

 

Example: Do not touch the hot stove.

 

E. Permission/Encouragement

 

To allow or encourage someone.

 

Example: Go ahead and speak.

 

Quick Rules for Imperatives

 

Base verb + object → “Sit on the chair.”

 

Polite requests → Add “please” → “Please open the window.”

 

Negative commands → Add “do not” or “don’t” → “Don’t run in the corridor.”

 

Exclamatory form → Add “!” → “Stop!”
