TENSE PATTERNS – RULES

 

1. Present Tense

 

Use: To show something happening now, a habit, or a general truth.

 

Simple Present: Subject + base verb (add -s/-es for 3rd person singular)

 

Example: She writes letters.

 

Present Continuous: Subject + is/am/are + verb-ing

 

Example: She is writing a letter.

 

Present Perfect: Subject + has/have + past participle (V3)

 

Example: She has written three letters today.

 

Present Perfect Continuous: Subject + has/have been + verb-ing

 

Example: She has been writing letters for 2 hours.

 

2. Past Tense

 

Use: To show something that happened in the past.

 

Simple Past: Subject + past form of verb (V2)

 

Example: She wrote a letter yesterday.

 

Past Continuous: Subject + was/were + verb-ing

 

Example: She was writing a letter at 5 pm.

 

Past Perfect: Subject + had + past participle (V3)

 

Example: She had written the letter before he arrived.

 

Past Perfect Continuous: Subject + had been + verb-ing

 

Example: She had been writing for 2 hours before dinner.

 

3. Future Tense

 

Use: To show something that will happen in the future.

 

Simple Future: Subject + will + base verb

 

Example: She will write a letter tomorrow.

 

Future Continuous: Subject + will be + verb-ing

 

Example: She will be writing a letter at 5 pm tomorrow.

 

Future Perfect: Subject + will have + past participle (V3)

 

Example: She will have written the letter by 5 pm.

 

Future Perfect Continuous: Subject + will have been + verb-ing

 

Example: She will have been writing for 2 hours by 5 pm.

Simple tense → Routine, habits, general truths

Continuous tense → Ongoing action

Perfect tense → Completed action

Perfect Continuous → Action in progress for a certain time
