TENSE
Tense refers to the time of an action or state. English has three primary tenses: past, present, and future.
1. Simple Tenses
Simple Present: Used for general truths, habitual actions, and scheduled events.
Rule: Base form of the verb (add -s or -es for third-person singular).
Examples: The sun rises in the east. She walks to school every day.
Simple Past: Used for completed actions that happened at a specific time in the past.
Rule: Add -ed to regular verbs (or use the irregular form).
Examples: I walked to the store yesterday. They ate dinner at 7 PM.
Simple Future: Used for actions that will happen in the future.
Rule: will + base form of the verb.
Examples: She will travel to Paris next month. I will call you later.
ASPECT
Aspect describes the duration or completion of an action. English has four aspects: simple, progressive, perfect, and perfect progressive. Tense and aspect work together to form the complete verb phrase.
1. Progressive Aspect (Continuous)
Used for ongoing actions. It focuses on the action in progress.
Rule: to be (in the correct tense) + verb + -ing.
Present Progressive: am/is/are + verb + -ing. (e.g., He is running now.)
Past Progressive: was/were + verb + -ing. (e.g., I was studying when you called.)
Future Progressive: will be + verb + -ing. (e.g., We will be sleeping at that time.)
2. Perfect Aspect
Used for actions completed at a specific point in time or actions that connect the past to the present.
Rule: to have (in the correct tense) + past participle of the verb.
Present Perfect: have/has + past participle. (e.g., I have lived here for five years.)
Past Perfect: had + past participle. (e.g., She had finished her work before he arrived.)
Future Perfect: will have + past participle. (e.g., By next year, he will have graduated.)
3. Perfect Progressive Aspect
Used for actions that have been ongoing up to a certain point in time.
Rule: to have (in the correct tense) + been + verb + -ing.
Present Perfect Progressive: have/has been + verb + -ing. (e.g., They have been waiting for two hours.)
Past Perfect Progressive: had been + verb + -ing. (e.g., He had been working all day before he went to bed.)
Future Perfect Progressive: will have been + verb + -ing. (e.g., By noon, I will have been driving for four hours.)
