Prepositions are words that show the relationship between a noun/pronoun and other words in a sentence.
They often indicate: time, place, direction, cause, manner, or instrument.
2. Common Types of Prepositions
A. Prepositions of Place/Position
in, on, at, under, over, above, below, between, among
Examples:
The book is on the table.
She is sitting between her friends.
B. Prepositions of Time
at, on, in, since, for, during, by, until
Examples:
He came at 5 pm.
I have lived here since 2010.
C. Prepositions of Direction/Movement
to, into, onto, from, out of, towards, through
Examples:
She went to the market.
The train passed through the tunnel.
D. Prepositions of Cause, Reason, Manner
because of, due to, by, with, like, as
Examples:
He succeeded because of hard work.
The letter was written by her.
3. QUICK RULES FOR PREPOSITIONS
Do not use a preposition at the end of a sentence in formal English if avoidable.
❌ Where are you going to? → ✅ Where are you going?
Use ‘at’ for a point, ‘in’ for an area, and ‘on’ for a surface.
Example: at the corner, in the room, on the table.
Use ‘since’ for a starting point in time, and ‘for’ for duration.
Example: I have worked here since Monday.
Example: I have worked here for 5 years.
Use ‘to’ for direction, ‘from’ for origin.
