NON-FINITE VERB RULES

Non-finite verbs are verb forms that do not show tense, number, or person. They cannot function as the main verb of a sentence on their own. The three types are infinitives, gerunds, and participles.

1. Infinitives

Rule: The base form of a verb preceded by "to".

Use: Functions as a noun, adjective, or adverb.

Examples:

To swim is good for your health. (Noun)

I have a lot of work to do. (Adjective)

She came here to study. (Adverb)

2. Gerunds

Rule: The -ing form of a verb.

Use: Functions as a noun.

Examples:

Swimming is my favorite hobby. (Subject)

I enjoy reading. (Object)

He is good at painting. (Object of a preposition)

3. Participles

Rule: The -ing form (present participle) or the -ed/-en form (past participle).

Use: Functions as an adjective or part of a verb phrase.

Examples:

The sleeping baby is cute. (Adjective - present participle)

The broken glass lay on the floor. (Adjective - past participle)

He is running fast. (Part of a verb phrase)
