Modal Verbs

 

Modal verbs are auxiliary verbs used to express:

 

Ability → can, could

 

She can swim very well.

 

Possibility → may, might, could

 

It may rain today.

 

Permission → may, can

 

You may leave early.

 

Obligation / Necessity → must, should, ought to, have to

 

You must wear a helmet.

 

Advice → should, ought to

 

You should study regularly.

 

Prohibition → must not, cannot

 

You must not enter the room.

 

Future likelihood / Prediction → shall, will, might

 

She will come tomorrow.

 

Politeness / Requests → could, would, may

 

Could you help me?

 

Rules to remember:

 

Modals are always followed by the base form of the main verb: He can swim.

 

They do not change form for tense or number.

 

Modals are not used with “to” (except “ought to”).

 

Negative: add not → must not, cannot, should not.
