1. COUNTABLE NOUNS

 

Definition:

Countable nouns are nouns that can be counted as individual units. They have singular and plural forms.

 

Examples:

 

Singular: book, apple, chair

Plural: books, apples, chairs

 

Rules:

Singular form with “a/an”:

I saw a cat.

She bought an apple.

 

Plural form without “a/an”:

I have two books.

There are many students in the class.

 

Use of quantifiers:

Many, few, several, a couple of → with countable nouns

 

Examples:

I have many friends.

There are few chairs in the room.

 

Questions & negatives:

How many…? → Countable nouns

Example: How many pens do you have?

 

Not many / few → negative sense

Example: There are not many options.

 

2. UNCOUNTABLE (NON-COUNT) NOUNS

 

Definition:

Uncountable nouns cannot be counted individually. They are treated as a single whole and do not have plural forms.

 

Examples:

water, rice, milk, sugar, knowledge, information

 

Rules:

No “a/an”:

I have a water → wrong

I have some water → ✅ correct

 

Use of quantifiers:

 

Some, much, a little, a lot of → with uncountable nouns

 

Examples:

She has much knowledge.

Can I have some milk?

 

Questions & negatives:

How much…? → Uncountable nouns

 

Examples:

How much rice is left?

There isn’t much sugar in the jar.

 

Special cases:

 

Some nouns can be both countable and uncountable with different meanings:

 

Hair (uncountable → She has long hair; countable → Three hairs fell on my shirt)

 

Paper (uncountable → Paper is expensive; countable → I bought three papers)

Countable: Can be counted (1, 2, 3…), has singular & plural
