(i) 6×6×6×6

This is multiplication of the same number, 6, four times.

Exponential form: 64

(ii) y×y

Multiplying y by itself two times.

Exponential form: y2

(iii) b×b×b×b×b

Multiplying b by itself five times.

Exponential form: b5

(iv) 5×5×7×7×7

5 is multiplied two times, so 52

7 is multiplied three times, so 73

Exponential form: 52×73

(v) 2×2×a×a×a

2 is multiplied two times, so 22

a is multiplied three times, so a3

Exponential form: 22×a3

(vi) a×a×a×a×c×c×c×c×d

a is multiplied four times, so a4

c is multiplied four times, so c4

d appears once, so d

Exponential form: a4×c4

2. Express as product of prime powers (in exponential form)

(i) 648

Prime factorisation: 648=2×2×2×3×3×3×3

In exponential form: 23×34

(ii) 405

Prime factorisation: 405=5×3×3×3×3

In exponential form: 5×34

(iii) 540

Prime factorisation: 540=2×2×3×3×3×5

In exponential form: 22×33×5

(iv) 3600

Prime factorisation: 3600=2×2×2×2×3×3×5×5

In exponential form: 24×32×52

3. Write the numerical value

(i) 2×103

103=1000

2×1000=2000

(ii) 72×23

72=49

23=8

49×8=392

(iii) 3×44

44=256

3×256=768

(iv) (−3)2×(−5)2

9×25=225

104=10000
